England successfully un-invaded

Yeah, being an island the British, once they had a viable unified kingdom, saw the absolute need for a strong naval defence. It was really King Henry VIII who laid the basis for the modern Royal Navy. Elizabeth I's navy successfully stymied the far larger Spanish Armada in 1588 both because the English were already starting to supplant the Spanish as the pre-eminent world naval power and also because of the weather. Napoleon seriously considered an invasion of Britain but Nelson and Trafalgar quickly showed him the light about that. Along comes Hitler. Now he never really wanted to invade Britain but when Churchill vowed to fight he somewhat reluctantly authorized Sea-Lion in 1940 with Goering's eager urging. The Germans knew that Britain ruled the waves so it was imperative to wipe them out in the air and then unleash the Luftwaffe against the RN. This never happened.

If the person posting this message left their e-mail address, we inserted some random characters to prevent spammers from harvesting their address. Spammers do this with automated "bots" that constantly search the Web looking for e-mail addresses. Since you're a human being, not a bot, you can easily obtain the real address by removing the text that says "ThisisToPreventSpam-XYZ-RemoveThis." including the random number XYZ and the period at the end. For example, <info@ThisIsToPreventSpam-123-RemoveThis.interesting.com> would become <info@interesting.com>.
